Here is some informal eveidence from an amateur music-lover. Once I bought
excellent headphones which provided an excellent separation and definition
of sources. After a year or something of experience with these headphones
I started to be able to follow more sources (melodic lines) than
previously in other situations, including concert listening and listening
with less-sophisticated equipment.
