Dear List,
We offer a
Research Assistant/Associate (f/m/d) - PhD position -
at the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics, RWTH
Aachen University, Germany
Our Profile
The Chair and Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics at
RWTH Aachen University examines sound processing techniques in the
human hearing system.
The goal of the Chair for Hearing Technology and Acoustics is to
expand interdisciplinary research in the field of perception and
processing of sound in complex acoustic environments. Listeners
range from children to the elderly, with and without hearing or
auditory processing disorders. The research topics are directly
related to communication as well as social and cognitive behavior
and are therefore an important part of our daily lives.
Beside other fields of research, the institute focuses on the
generation, propagation and mitigation of sound. In this context,
measurement techniques and simulation technologies are developed
to explore the physics of complex acoustic scenarios, but also for
computer-aided generation of acoustic scenarios using acoustic
virtual reality. Acoustic phenomena and processes are of interest
when applied to machines and technical processes. Finally, human
perception is the central issue. This is of particular interest
for research questions concerning the effect of noise.
We offer you the opportunity to work in a dynamic, highly
interdisciplinary team with extensive technical equipment and
advanced training in cutting-edge methods of hearing research and
acoustics.
Your Profile
- Above-average university degree (master's degree or
comparable) in electrical engineering, physics, or another
relevant field and fulfillment of the requirements for admission
to a doctoral program
- Experience with (acoustic) signal processing
- Good knowledge in one or more of the following areas: acoustic
measurement techniques, psychoacoustics, spatial audio, virtual
acoustics, virtual reality, statistics
- Good programming skills in Matlab, preferably also in Python
and in C++
- Excellent communication skills in English (teaching,
publications)
- Basic communication skills in German (e.g., for organisation
of listening experiments) and, if required, willingness to learn
the language (university courses are available)
- Interest in fundamental research in the field of acoustic
simulation, auralization and perceptual evaluation
- Willingness to contribute to and take responsibility for
teaching activities
- Flexibility and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
Your Duties and Responsibilities
- Research and development in the research areas of generation,
propagation and mitigation of unwanted sound (noise) and
psychoacoustics.
- Research and development of measurement techniques and
simulation technologies (acoustic virtual reality).
- Planning, design, implementation and evaluation of experiments
with audio(-visual) virtual reality in various scenarios with
noise.
- Publications of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
and at scientific meetings.
- Handling of organizational and self-administrative tasks,
contributing to research project applications, and actively
collaborating within the Institute for Hearing Technology and
Acoustics.
- Assisting with courses in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree
programs (lab courses, seminars, exercises, projects, exam
preparation, supervision and follow-up, (co-)supervision of
students’ final theses).
Please submit your application by September 17, 2023 in
electronic format (pdf) with a detailed curriculum vitae
(including information on research, teaching, and project
management experience), certificates, and contact information for
one or two references to the contact below.
