[AUDITORY] [Reminder]: PhD position at the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics at RWTH Aachen University in the area of audiovisual psychophysics and cognitive neuroscience

[Small reminder: Deadline December 8, 2022]

Dear list,

We offer a

Research Assistant/Associate (f/m/d) - PhD position - Hearing Technology and Acoustics
PhD position at the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics at RWTH Aachen University in the area of audiovisual psychophysics and cognitive neuroscience

Our Profile
The Chair and Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics at RWTH Aachen University examines sound processing techniques in the human hearing system.

The goal of the Chair for Hearing Technology and Acoustics is to expand interdisciplinary research in the field of perception and processing of sound in complex acoustic environments. Listeners range from children to the elderly, with and without hearing or auditory processing disorders. The research topics are directly related to communication as well as social and cognitive behavior and are therefore an important part of our daily lives.

Within the scope of the priority program AUDICTIVE (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG, SPP2236), the Research Training Group 2416 – Multi senses, Multi scales (DFG), and the project Equal-Life (EU, Horizon 2020, grant agreement No 87474) the institute focuses on the perceptual evaluation and cognitive processing of acoustic and audiovisual stimuli. In this context, listening experiments are designed, implemented, tested, and performed to challenge models of cognition and gain a deeper understanding of cognitive processes. The behavioral results of these experiments are complemented by (electro-)physiological measures, such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) to uncover new relationships between bio signals and behavior.

We offer you the opportunity to work in a dynamic, highly interdisciplinary team with extensive technical equipment and advanced training in cutting-edge methods of hearing research and acoustics.

Your Profile

  • Above-average university degree (master's degree or comparable) in electrical engineering, physics, or another relevant field and fulfillment of the requirements for admission to a doctoral program
  • Experience with electrophysiological measures, preferably EEG
  • Good knowledge in one or more of the following areas: acoustic measurement techniques, psychoacoustics, spatial audio, acoustic virtual reality, statistics
  • Good programming skills in Matlab, preferably also Python
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in German (listening experiments and teaching) and English (teaching, publications)
  • Interest in fundamental research in the field of behavioral/cognitive neuroscience and its practical application
  • Willingness to contribute to and take responsibility for teaching activities
  • Flexibility and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team

Your Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research and development in the research areas of audiovisual psychophysics and cognitive neuroscience
  • Planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of experiments with audiovisual stimulation techniques and electrophysiological measurements.
  • Publication of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Handling of organizational and self-administrative tasks, contributing to research project applications, and actively collaborating within the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics.
  • Assisting with courses in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs (lab courses, seminars, exercises, projects, exam preparation, supervision and follow-up, (co-)supervision of students’ final theses).

Please submit your application by December 8, 2022 in electronic format (pdf) with a detailed curriculum vitae (including information on research, teaching, and project management experience), certificates, and contact information for one or two references to the contact below.
