[AUDITORY] PhD Opening on Communication in Augmented Reality (AR) and robot-based Telepresence



At the Audiovisual Technology Group (https://www.tu-ilmenau.de/en/mt-avt), Institute for Media Technology, Faculty for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, there is an opening for a full-time PhD researcher position, to be filled starting as soon as possible, ideally by 15th January 2023: 

Scientific Co-worker | PhD researcher for
“Communication in Augmented Reality (AR) and robot-based Telepresence“ (f/m/d)
In full time (100%) for a period of at first 3 years, with the possibility of extension. Remuneration corresponds to the applicable tariff for German Federal States public service (TV-L13).

Project context and researcher’s activities
The position is part of the collaborative project CO-HUMANICS funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation in cooperation with other four scientific groups from TU Ilmenau. The project investigates co-presence using AR technologies and telepresence via assistive robots. We aim to enable social connectedness for the aging population with their families and friends. In the project, the accepted candidate will collaborate in the development and evaluation of different prototypes following user-centered design approaches. We aim to provide solutions that could be used by different age groups and we plan to conduct studies with different age groups. 
In this collaborative project, the PhD student will address research questions related to human-technology interaction and human-technology mediated communication. The focus is on the implementation and evaluation of technologies with a focus on verbal and non-verbal communication and interaction. The project results achieved by the candidate should form the basis for a doctorate at TU Ilmenau. It is expected that the candidate will take over organizational and self-administrative tasks within the usual amounts.

Your profile
  • strong University degree (M.Sc./ Diploma (Univ.)) in one of the fields such as computer science, computational linguistics, media technology, electrical engineering, information technology, neuroinformatics, psychology, or other related human-computer interaction areas.
  • expertise in one or more of the following areas: audio/video/multimedia technology, speech processing, telecommunications / network technology, UX design, digital signal processing, statistical analysis procedures, implementation / analysis of empirical studies.
  • good knowledge in or more of the following programming languages and tools: Unity/Unreal, Python/C/C++/ MATLAB, or similar.
  • knowledge in areas such as pattern recognition, machine learning, conversation analysis or modelling of perception and/or cognition is a plus.
  • interest in multidisciplinary research at the interface between technology and human perception. 
  • very good communication skills, commitment, enthusiasm, independent working style as well as initiative and team spirit. 
  • At least good proficiency in English, high proficiency in German (written and spoken).
