[AUDITORY] reference sound for loudness-matching stimuli

Hello all,

I’m designing an online auditory experiment and would like to loudness-match my stimulus set. Since I don’t have the luxury of running a loudness-matching preliminary experiment, my idea was to calibrate the loudness levels of my stimulus set (measured in sones using Psysound3) to a reference sound. I would then ask participants at the beginning of the experiment to adjust the volume on their playback device until the reference sound was barely audible. Sounds in the stimulus set would then be adjusted to a given sound level in sones relative to the reference sound. However, I don’t have a reference sound handy. Could anyone point me to a candidate reference sound that could serve this function in my experiment? (Fyi, the stimulus set consists of environmental sounds exported from freesound.org.)

I’d greatly appreciate any and all responses off list. Thanks a bunch.

David
