Job Description / Summary of Duties

Title:  Research Psychologist

The ideal candidate will have a background in cognitive science, linguistics, speech perception, and/or a related field, and will draw from this knowledge to contribute to, and expand upon, a program of research focused on human communication.  The candidate will help to identify the gaps in our understanding of human communication, particularly as it occurs within the context of the natural stressors inherent in complex operational environments (e.g., noise, time constraints, high workload, and degraded communication signals). The candidate will develop behavioral research projects to address these knowledge gaps, informed by a strong knowledge of the relevant literature and an acquired understanding of real-world, U.S. Air Force relevant, communication task environments. Of particular interest will be research focusing on the characteristics of effective communication, the identification of processes employed for overcoming the barriers to effective communication, and the identification of indices of communication breakdown. Further research will focus on how humans can manage multiple streams of communication simultaneously. The candidate will be expected to design critical experiments, as well as collect, analyze, and report results to the scientific community in general, and to relevant DoD communities, in particular. Importantly, the candidate will use results from these research efforts to inform the design of displays, and communication management systems, and to develop interfaces supporting natural human-machine communication.
