[AUDITORY] PhD positions available in auditory/music perception and communication at the University of Rochester

Dear Colleagues,

The Piazza Lab (www.elisepiazza.com) at the University of Rochester is recruiting graduate students interested in a PhD in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, focusing on auditory/music perception and communication, for the fall of 2020.

Dr. Elise Piazza’s research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms of human auditory perception and communication across the lifespan, including how musicians coordinate during performance, how musical training impacts the hierarchical organization of sounds in the brain, and how listeners compute summary statistics (or concise “gist” representations) of complex sounds.

Dr. Piazza’s recent work has revealed how mothers adapt their vocal timbre to accommodate infants’ perceptual demands, as well as the role of neural coupling in natural communicative interactions (e.g., singing), using fNIRS. She is currently investigating the neural underpinnings of live musical performance using MR-compatible instruments in the fMRI scanner and will continue this work at the U of R.

The University of Rochester is a top-ranked private research university, and PhD students in the BCS program will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from the Eastman School of Music, one of the world’s premiere music conservatories. The University’s Cluster on Interdisciplinary Studies funds a Music Cognition Symposium quarterly, which provides access to an international array of researchers on this topic (https://www.esm.rochester.edu/theory/music-cognition-symposium/).

Graduate students in BCS are fully funded for at least four years of study. For more information about applying to our graduate program, please visit the department’s webpage: http://www.sas.rochester.edu/bcs/graduate/admission.html. Applications are due on December 1.

The University of Rochester has a strong commitment to diversity and actively encourages applications from groups underrepresented in higher education. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The Piazza Lab is committed to building a healthy and inclusive environment for conducting research. Come join us next fall!
