[AUDITORY] PhD position: Decoding brain signals in response to sound: EEG signal processing and deep learning

A 4 year funded PhD studentship is available at ExpORL, Dept. Neurosciences, KU Leuven, Belgium on the topic of decoding brain signals in response to sound, using EEG signal processing and deep learning. When a person listens to sound, various parts of the auditory system are activated, including the brain. We can then measure the brain waves using EEG, decode them and draw conclusions about the status of the auditory system.
The goal of this project is to build better brain wave decoders and use them for diagnostics of the auditory system and to include them in novel neuro-steered hearing aids.
The work mostly involves EEG signal processing, using both classical signal processing and state-of-the art artificial intelligence techniques such as deep learning. Besides signal processing, the work also encompasses experimental design, data collection, and hypothesis-driven neuroscience research.

Candidates need a degree in engineering, physics, or similar, and good signal processing and programming skills. Excellent English proficiency is required as well as a strong interest in auditory perception and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team. Knowledge of human neurophysiology and psychology of hearing is a strong plus.

Postdocs with relevant experience can be considered as well.
