Post-doctoral research position at Walter Reed Army Medical Center



A fully-funded Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Army Audiology and Speech Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC.
 
The Research Associate will support an NIH-sponsored research program aimed at measuring and modeling speech intelligibility by normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners in environments with masking sounds that fluctuate in intensity.  Experimental and computational modeling studies will be conducted in the Research Section of the Army Audiology and Speech Center at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) for this project, Joshua Bernstein, Ph.D.  The Research Associate will join a dynamic group of researchers representing diverse disciplines including psychophysics, engineering, clinical audiology, speech science, and linguistics. 
 
Responsibilities include:
1. Help develop and run experimental and modeling studies concerned with speech intelligibility in fluctuating backgrounds.  This will include: help with literature reviews, experimental design, develop of testing methodology programming for stimulus presentation and data collection, equipment set-up and calibration, subject recruitment and testing, and computational model development and validation.
2.  Design and implement new scientific studies as needed, help with data analysis, writing, and publication of the experimental and modeling data.
3.  Maintain research records according to current HIPAA regulations.
4.  Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Experience Required:
Experience in Hearing Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field with an emphasis on auditory processing of speech and other sounds.  
Background knowledge in several of the following areas is preferred: Experimental design and methods for research involving human subjects; Psychophysics, including the measurement of speech intelligibility; Signal processing; Statistics; Computational modeling; Clinical audiology; and/or Computer programming.
 
Education Required:
Ph.D. in Hearing Science, Audiology, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field.
 
Funding time frame:
Funding has been awarded for this position for one (1) year, and is expected to recur for up to two (2) additional years.  Salary commensurate with experience.  Walter Reed Army Medical Center is the flagship of the US Army health care system, and will be relocating in September, 2011 to the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
