I indeed didn't see the problem of the lacking absolute reference of the single pitches when I made my comment at first.

As a workaround idea, the shepard tone could for example be combined with a reference pitch in order to provide a stronger absolute reference pitch however, possibly in alternation with the "wheeled" shepard pitch.
Given the saliency of the various musical intervals, this may also provide a parallel to the different colors of the wheel.

While not being as universal as the quality of the various colors, it could at least expand the range of possible subjects to those who received applicable training.
