Re: [AUDITORY] Survey - Electric Vehicle Acoustics (EVA) project

Hi Flaithrí,

I hope nobody will be upset when I do a bit of self-advertising here – we’ve been working on safety-related aspects of e-vehicle sound (with and without AVAS) for some time now (see links below).

Our results show that for street-crossing decisions in interaction with accelerating EVs, pedestrians make riskier decisions than for accelerating conventional vehicles, even with activated AVAS. This in an ongoing project and we will conduct experiments targeted at identifying AVAS designs that are more informative for pedestrians in this scenario.

One relevant aspect for your project could be that AVAS is not only important for detecting the vehicle auditorily, but that in addition it is relevant to think about information about the vehicle’s motion (particularly acceleration) conveyed by the vehicle sound.

If you feel like discussing any of these aspects, just drop me an email!

Best

Daniel

Subject: Survey - Electric Vehicle Acoustics (EVA) project

Dear List Members,

It would be greatly appreciated if the below anonymised survey could be distributed to those in your network who have an interest in Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) for electric vehicles, AVAS standardisation and regulation, universal design for electric vehicles, or pedestrian safety.

The EVA project, funded by Science Foundation Ireland and led by the National Disability Authority (Ireland) in partnership with the Technological University of the Shannon (Ireland), focuses on how EVs impact pedestrian safety. As part of this work, we would like to gather information about public perception and pedestrian awareness of AVAS  - particularly from those with disabilities.
