[AUDITORY] PhD position in human auditory physiology and perception at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The Hearing Research Lab (http://hrl.shs.illinois.edu/) is seeking a PhD student for an NIH-funded project examining associations between the auditory efferent system, hearing in noise, and listening effort in adults. The position will begin in August 2024. Individuals with a background in audiology, neuroscience, psychology, engineering, or a related area are encouraged to apply. Individuals with experience conducting physiologic and/or behavioral assessments of auditory function are especially encouraged to apply.

Our laboratory studies the ascending and descending auditory pathways in adults with normal hearing and with hearing loss. We use a combination of physiologic measures (e.g., otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses) and perceptual measures of auditory function. The long-term goals of our research program are to determine how sound perception is driven by the interconnections between the peripheral and central auditory systems, to delineate the effect of hearing loss on these interconnections, and to determine the impact of potential treatments when these interconnections are impaired.

Our laboratory is part of the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (https://ahs.illinois.edu/speech-&-hearing-science). Information about our PhD program can be found at https://ahs.illinois.edu/speech-%26-hearing-science/phd.

Interested individuals can send a CV and cover letter describing research interests to the lab director Ian Mertes (imertes@xxxxxxxxxxxx). Preference will be given to individuals who submit materials by February 16.
