A full-time position as a professor in Technical Audiology is vacant at the Research Unit of Oto-Rhino-LaryngologyDepartment of Clinical ResearchFaculty of Health SciencesUniversity of Southern Denmark (SDU)  

The position is a permanent position.

The academic position

The professor will be appointed at the Department of Clinical Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU. The position will be within Technical Audiology, and focus areas could include but are not limited to hearing-aid processing and fitting, psychoacoustics, speech perception, electroencephalography, and real-world listening outcome. Trans-sectional research and collaboration will be expected.

Areas of responsibility

The professor will be responsible for initiating, supervising, and publishing research in the field of Technical Audiology. The professor will also be responsible for developing new strategies for collaboration with other key stakeholders in the areas of Technical Audiology. Furthermore, the professor will be expected to be the daily leader of the research staff in the Technical Audiology Section and will also be expected to support the head of the Audiology Education in creating an inspiring education at the highest international level.

Additionally, the professor must teach and mentor postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students at the Faculty of Health Science, as well as maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding. Participation in assessment work is part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will be an important task.

Research activity, network, and collaboration

The professor will be expected to contribute to further developing the research strategy and profile of the department with special emphasis on Technical Audiology. The professor will also be expected to increase the research activity and to establish collaboration with other researchers at SDU and OUH. Specifically, a close collaboration with the Medical Audiology Section at Odense University Hospital (OUH) will be expected. The professor will also be expected to participate in furthering scientific development of the fields both nationally and internationally.

Employers

The Research Unit of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology at the Department of Clinical Research is divided into three main sections dealing with research concerning Surgically Related ENT, Medical Audiology, and Technical Audiology. It has today 49 employees: 2 clinical professors, a research coordinator, 11 associate professors, 8 postdocs, 10 PhD-students, five research nurses and 2 research secretaries. Most of the positions are combinations of clinical functions (major part), teaching and research.

The research unit teaches in three educations: Medicine, Audiology and Audiologopedics. Around 1,000 lessons and 200 hours of supervision are delivered per year. It produces approximately 40 international peer-reviewed publications per year. The funding for 2020 was 14 million Danish Kroner, of which more than 90% were external contributions, primarily established by the audiological sections.

Professor Christian Godballe, MD, PhD, heads the unit.

The Technical Audiology Section conducts basic and applied research aimed at understanding hearing-related problems and developing solutions for their rehabilitation. It currently consists of two associate professors, one assistant professor, one teaching assistant professor, five PhD students, a research master student, and a research assistant. The group works on topics related to hearing-aid processing and fitting, psychoacoustics, speech perception, electroencephalography, and real-world listening outcome. Using state-of-the-art equipment for diagnostic and hearing-aid research, it performs studies in and outside of the lab to explore new ideas and to translate them into audiological practice.

Actual research areas are:

·       Individualised hearing-aid processing

·       New methods for hearing-aid fitting

·       EEG-based measures of speech perception

·       Hearing deficits in school-age children

·       Real-world listening outcome with hearing loss

The Department of Clinical Research comprises >45 research units based on departments at Odense University Hospital and Mental Health Services in the Region of Southern Denmark. (For more information about the department’s research, please see SDU’s Research Portal.)

The department staffs teach at all the programmes offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences, however, primarily in medicine. (Read more about the department and its key figures here.)

Salary and terms of employment

The successful applicant for the professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
