[AUDITORY] Open Post-doc Position in Audiovisual Space Perception using VR technologies – Laboratoire ICube, Université de Strasbourg

Dear list,

we are looking to fill a post-doctoral researcher position in a project on the audiovisual perception of interior spaces. The position is funded by a Chaire Gutenberg grant awarded to Prof. Daniel Oberfeld-Twistel and is available for 8 months. Start date is negotiable but we aim to fill the position by September or October 2020. The research will be conducted in an interdisciplinary environment at Laboratoire ICube (http://icube.unistra.fr/), located in the beautiful city of Strasbourg, France.

The aim of the project is to identify how human perception of the spatial layout of rooms is influenced by auditory information. Based on Daniel Oberfeld-Twistel's research on the visual perception of interior spaces (e.g., https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0201976), we will investigate the role of auditory perception for the perception of interior spaces. Is it possible to gain an accurate impression of the layout of an interior space simply by listening to sounds in this space? When both visual and auditory information is available, does the perceived size of an interior space change when the acoustical properties of the space change? To answer these and other questions, we use an advanced combined audio-visual virtual-reality (VR) system to interactively present physically plausible visual and auditory simulations of interior spaces and experimentally vary the size of the spaces as well as the acoustic properties of the room surfaces. Using advanced psychophysical methods, we will identify the interaction of visual and auditory information in judgments of room size, and investigate the weighting of auditory and visual cues. This multi-disciplinary project involves collaboration with the Computer Graphics and Geometry team at ICube (Prof. Dominique Bechmann), Dr. Birgitta Dresp-Langley (CNRS Strasbourg), the department of Experimental Psychology at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, and the Institute of Technical Acoustics at RWTH Aachen.

We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic about experimental research on auditory and visual perception by means of virtual-reality technologies. The post-doctoral researcher will engage in the design and programming of the behavioral experiments, data collection in human subjects, the supervision of students and research assistants, statistical analysis, publication of the results in international journals with peer review, and presentations at conferences.

The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, Hearing Science, Vision Science, Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent field. This project involves advanced VR technologies and psychophysical methods, and thus skills in VR programming (e.g., Unity, virtual acoustics) are necessary and familiarity with experimental psychology/psychophysics, statistical data analysis and auditory perception or acoustics is preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills in English are required (minimum: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) level C1). Skills in French are a plus.

The position is available to start as early as September 1, 2020.

Candidates should submit the following materials electronically to Prof. Daniel Oberfeld-Twistel (oberfeld@xxxxxxxxxxxx), in a single PDF document:

1.            A letter of motivation.

2.            A current curriculum vitae.

3.            Two publications or other writing samples.

4.            The name and contact information for two references that are familiar with your work.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Informal enquiries can be directed to Daniel Oberfeld-Twistel via email. This is an 8 months position. Salary will be set according to the institutional guidelines (about 2250 € gross per month).

Best

Daniel
