NIH T35 Summer Research Training Program 2020
Spend the summer in beautiful Portland, Oregon
at the
National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR)
VA Portland Health Care System
The NCRAR is located at the VA Portland Health Care System in Portland Oregon. We have four student traineeships available for summer 2020 that will be awarded to outstanding students currently enrolled in a graduate program leading to the Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) degree. These traineeships are funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health National Institutes on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH NIDCD).
Note: These internships are available only to US citizens.
Experiences at the NCRAR will include:
• Working alongside a scientist on a hearing-related study as part of the research team.
• Conducting a variety of clinical research procedures that may include audiometric testing, hearing aid fitting, central auditory processing testing, electroacoustic testing of hearing aids, tinnitus assessment and treatment and electrophysiological methods (ABR, EFR, Late EPs, OAEs)
• Attending NCRAR seminars and research meetings, participating in the grant-writing process, preparing publications and conference presentations, and conducting statistical analyses of research data.
• In addition, students will participate in an interactive ethics class, and other short courses arranged and hosted by NCRAR.
• At the end of the three-month traineeship, students will be expected to present their work to the NCRAR staff and to prepare a poster for presentation at the Spring 2021 AAS meeting in Arizona (for which a travel stipend will be provided by the AAS).
Each trainee will be paid a living stipend at the current NIH rate ($2068 per month). As a special
bonus, NIDCD has offered to fund travel scholarships to each trainee to attend the next meeting
of the American Auditory Society, held every year in the spring.
The application deadline is January 15, 2020.
Decisions regarding awarding of the traineeships will be made by February 1, 2020
Eligibility:
• Must be enrolled in an accredited Au.D. graduate program
• Must not be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program or in an AuD/PhD program
• Must have had at least one year of graduate work in the Au.D. program
Must commit to a traineeship at the NCRAR for three months in the summer. Under special circumstances, it may be possible to work out a shorter time period if the graduate program cannot accommodate the student’s full three-month absence. However the monthly stipend will have to be prorated if participation is less than three full months.
We strongly encourage students to stay for the full three months. If this is not
possible please let us know up front.
• Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
• We strongly encourage applications from ethnic or racial minorities
