A full-time post-doctoral position is available in the Hearing Research Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder to work with Dr. Kathryn Arehart and Mr. James Kates and collaborators on topics related to auditory perception and hearing aids. The position is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIDCD) and the hearing-aid industry. The position involves cognitive and auditory testing as well as developing computational models of speech intelligibility and sound quality for adults wearing bilateral digital hearing aids. Our program of research considers variability in speech understanding among older listeners; how cognition contributes to that variability; and the extent to which those issues can be addressed with specific hearing aid signal-processing strategies. We also work on the development of objective metrics for the prediction of sound quality and speech intelligibility with binaural hearing aids.

The Hearing Research Lab (https://www.colorado.edu/lab/hearlab/) is housed in the Department of Speech, Language Hearing Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Department has strong ties with the University of Colorado neuroscience and cognitive science programs as well as the audiology department at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.

The candidate will participate in all phases of translational research including experimental design, stimulus generation, participant recruitment and testing, data collection and statistical analysis, grant administration, supervision of student research assistants, and dissemination of results at scientific conferences and in research publications.  The successful candidate will work on the modeling of perceptual datasets for the goal of developing objective metrics for predicting speech intelligibility and sound quality. The candidate will also attend professional skills training workshops offered through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

The position is initially supported for one year. Additional years of support may be available contingent on satisfactory progress and availability of grant funds. Mentorship in grant writing will be available for candidates who wish to seek independent funding. Salary is commensurate with NIH post-doctoral stipend levels.

The University of Colorado offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition benefit and ECO Pass. The University of Colorado Boulder is one of the largest employers in Boulder County and offers an inspiring higher education environment. Learn more about the University of Colorado Boulder.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent research experience in a field related in engineering, audiology, hearing science or cognitive science.  The candidate will also have strong computational and signal processing skills. Strong communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team, are also required.
