Re: [AUDITORY] Moving the AUDITORY list?

Dear List -

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions in response to my proposal to change the list infrastructure.

I have to admit I was taken aback by the negative reaction to Google among some members. It's useful for me to be reminded about that; I mostly move in a pro-Google bubble.

Although the McGill listserv is dated, it works well for the most part, and I fully expect it to be stable; we do not need to move onto a different mailing list. My proposal was based merely on the observation that we were using a dated system, with a certain amount of legacy maintenance liability, when I saw no reason not to move to something more convenient. I now understand that, for some of you at least, there are substantial reasons not to move.

The list's dependence on www.auditory.org, which runs on home-made software and a 13-year-old server hosted by an institution to which I am no longer affiliated, is a more serious source of concern, but thanks to suggestions from the list I am now confident I can move it to a cloud machine and solve the sustainability issues. This transition is in progress.

In summary, then, you can expect everything AUDITORY to continue as usual.  This discussion has been valuable for me, but there's no need to devote any further attention to it.

Also, thanks to everyone who expressed gratitude for my stewardship of the list.  It's my pleasure to continue in this role (indeed, I would be sad to step down), and I'd like to acknowledge how nourishing it has been to be part of such a supportive and stimulating community!
