Dear Sofia, we have applied a subjective tempo rating in many listening experiments, whereby the listener adjusts a slider ranging from Not at all to Entirely to the question “To what extent does the following
word describe your experience of what you hear?, and the word being “Rapid”. As an index of listeners’ experience of “event rate” this works surprisingly well, the results accounting for the obvious fact that how “rapid” something is perceptually depends on
both the beat rate (tempo) and the density of sounds, as demonstrated in the attached JASA paper.
