When vision is lost, other senses can be enhanced. Our previous research
has shown that blind individuals show improved performance, compared to
normal subjects, for discriminating between two sound sources. However
when blind participants were asked to judge how far a sound source was,
the performance was significantly worse. The PhD programme will
build on our current research, to examine spatial perception using sound
for different auditory tasks, in different acoustical environments, in
participants who are blind compared to those who have some residual
vision and normally sighted participants. We propose a systematic
study, using simulated reverberant and anechoic environments, to explore
various parameters of auditory perception in normally sighted and
visually impaired individuals.
Applications are invited from ambitious and self-motivated UK/EU
candidates with at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree in
psychology (or related discipline) with an interest in perception or
sensory loss, hearing, or expertise in audio engineering or music
technology. Good programming skills in Matlab are also essential.
International students are welcome to apply but must be able to pay the
difference between UK/EU fees and international fees.
You will be based in the Vision and Eye Research
Unit, School of Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University. This project
requires working across a multidisciplinary team of vision, computer and
hearing scientists including Drs Cirstea and Kolarik and Professor Brian
Moore. The project will involve clinical data
collection and analysis from patients and volunteers, and a variety of
computing work (including imaging and physiological signal analysis,
graphics and statistics). Vision and Eye Research Unit (VERU) was awarded
'world class' and' internationally excellent' scores in the Last Research
Excellence Framework (REF 2014). Deadline for applications is 12th
February 2018. Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Shahina
Pardhan
(
Shahina.Pardhan@xxxxxxxxxxxx).
