Research Scientist – Communication Sciences and Disorders
The National Military Audiology & Speech Pathology Center at Walter
Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, is seeking a
creative and energetic scientist to carry out a translational research
program addressing the cognitive-communication, speech and/or
audiological impairments affecting our patient population of military
service members and their families. This is a full-time, U.S.
Government civil service position at the GS-13 level, with a 100%
focus on research. The successful candidate will join five other
permanent research scientists and more than 15 other full-time
researchers in a dynamic research environment that is integrated with
the largest and most comprehensive Audiology and Speech-Language
Pathology clinics within the Military Health System.
The ideal candidate is an early-to-mid career scientist or clinical
researcher with post-doctoral experience who is interested in building
an investigator-initiated research program within the context of a
major medical center. The position provides unmatched access to both
the unique clinical population and the outstanding facilities of the
Military Health System, which serves more than 9.4 million
beneficiaries including active duty service members, retirees, and
their dependents. In addition to a permanently funded salary, the
successful candidate will have access to compete for a broad range of
research funding opportunities, including intramural DoD funding, NIH
grants, and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements with the
private sector. Strong partnerships with a variety of academic
institutions provide many opportunities to interact with students and
faculty from universities and government research laboratories in the
Washington, DC, area. Walter Reed’s position within the Defense Health
Agency also provides unparalleled opportunities to engage in applied
research programs that have the potential to affect healthcare policy
across the Military Health System.

Qualifications:
Education:
A research doctorate in Speech, Language, Cognitive, or Hearing
science, or related field (Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology,
Neuropsychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Computer Science,
Linguistics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, etc.) is preferred,
although an individual with a master’s degree in Speech-Language
Pathology or Clinical Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) and experience
directing research involving speech and hearing sciences will be
considered. Candidates with post-doctoral research experience are
preferred.
Experience:
Experience (3-5 years) conducting and analyzing high-quality studies
related to speech and hearing science is required, with an associated
track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Candidates with knowledge of speech, language, cognitive, and auditory
processes related to normal and impaired cognitive-communication
encountered in the military population are preferred.
