Call for applications for the post of Director of the Laboratory for Science and Technologies for Music and Sound (UMR 9912 STMS) March 31, 2017 STMS - UMR 9912 https://www.ircam.fr/recherche/lunite-mixte-de-recherche-stms/ https://www.ircam.fr The Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics and Music (IRCAM), the French Ministry of Culture and Communication (MCC), the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) are inviting applications for the post of Director of the Laboratory for Science and Technologies for Music and Sound (UMR 9912 STMS). Applicants sought after are primarily Directors of Research at the CNRS or IRCAM, university professors or equivalent, without excluding other profiles of a similar level. Applicants must hold an HDR (French habilitation to direct research), or, for foreign applicants, justify an equivalent experience. The laboratory “Science and Technologies for Music and Sound” (STMS) is a mixed research laboratory under the combined aegis of IRCAM, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the UPMC attached to the CNRS INS2I (primarily), INSIS, and INSHS, as well as the engineering faculty at the UPMC, and the Collegium Musicae de Sorbonne Universités. Located in IRCAM, the STMS is responsible for the scientific and technological aspect of this institute’s founding project that brings together scientific research, technological development, and contemporary musical creation. STMS includes just over a hundred people; thirty scientists and scientist-instructors, a dozen engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel in addition to approximately 60 non- permanent staff members: doctoral students, post-doctoral positions, and developers. STMS develops its interdisciplinary research activities in the domain of sciences for music and sound in their theoretical, technological, and experimental aspects, addressing the complexity of the audio- musical object. With seven research teams each working on specific methodologies in addition to the laboratory’s transversal themes, the laboratory implements approaches concerning: modeling, the simulation and analysis in the domain of sound signals, acoustics or space, or experimental systems; formal representations and languages for composition assistance, analysis and performance; musical, gestural, and sound interactions with digital systems; contemporary musicology and the analysis of creative processes; audio and musical perception and cognition; sound design. The laboratory positions itself on recent developments in computational sciences to address questions of natural and artificial (co)creativity and the complex inter-relationships that exist between body, space/objects, mind/cognition and dynamics of digital information. These activities involve, beyond institutional research, numerous collaborative projects (ANR, H2020, ERC, etc.) and lead, for certain advanced technologies, to multiple forms of industrial valorization. A particularity of STMS compared to other structures dedicated to sound or to technologies for music is its close relationship with musical creation and contemporary sound, demanding a particular understanding of the artistic issues surrounding composition, interpretation, improvisation, and all forms of performance, notably those which question the centrality of the work or author. This relationship is at the heart of IRCAM’s mission, thus constituting a unique art and sciences host-environment for this UMR. The objectives of the future director of the UMR include the coherence of the scientific project and relationships with the scientific authorities, as well as the development of long-range interactions with artistic creation, the development and refinement of research and development strategies in coherence with major techno-scientific developments and the fundamental missions of IRCAM, the development of the laboratory’s international footprint, the integration of new forms of thesis in the arts, concrete actions for the improvement of the gender balance of the UMR’s staff. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the UMR to consult with the scientists, for example through a seminar, on their work and their vision of the future of the research carried out in the UMR STMS within the specific context of IRCAM. • Strong expertise in one or several of the scientific domains at the STMS • References in the practice/theory of the art-science articulation and/or research in art • Reference in managing research or political structures and in the mediation of research, in prospective and scientific programming, in large-scale project management, in both French and international contexts • A capacity to understand institutional structures and French research and their administrative functioning • A very strong knowledge of the French, European, and International scientific communities and environments in the fields of science and technologies for music and sound • Availability, rigor, large work capacity, open mind, ability to lead scientific teams • Fluent knowledge of French and English Calendar Prior to Mai 15, 2017 : Applications including a CV, your most important 5 – 10 publications, a cover letter including (under 4 pages) the vision of the development of research at the STMS for the 5 years to come and the place of the STMS within French and international research landscapes. Prior to June 16, 2017: ranking of the candidates by the STMS laboratories on an advisory basis. Applications will be examined by the scientific authorities that overlook the UMR STMS, who can, if they desire, interview a selection of applicants. The UMR STMS’s Laboratory Council will be consulted on the applicant(s) selected by the scientific authorities. The statutory bodies will also provide their input (including the competent sections of the French National Committee on Scientific Research). It is preferable that the selected applicant(s) join the UMR STMS between September 1, 2017 and January 1, 2018. Contact Applications can be sent before May 15, 2017 to: umr.cotutelles@xxxxxxxx Contacts to meet the UMR STMS scientists can be made via: stms@xxxxxxxx |
