========

We would like to share with you one of our interdisciplinary courses offered this summer in the field of sound and design. The course focuses on the design of spatial objects through sound. It explores the intimate connection between two predominant human senses, seeing and hearing, and how they augment each other. The target group are students of architecture, design, and media who are interested in design processes, techniques using multimedia digital tools and coding.

Please find all the details about the course here:

More details below in blue.

Course Components

Week 1-2: Lectures& discussions, field work, sound sampling & montage
This phase of the studio consists of lectures, a workshop, tours and activities to identify, collect and compose the elements of Berlin’s soundscape. The students will start working with handheld digital sound recorders provided by the instructor. We will conduct a field investigation of specific places in Berlin in regard to their sonic qualities and potential for formal design work.
We will also hold an intensive electronics and programming workshop and work with hardware (recording device, Arduino) and software (Audacity, Max 7) and how they may lead to the construction of “index models.”
Week 2: Mapping soundscape, psychogeography & index models
In parallel with the sound sampling and montage, the students will produce soundscape maps. The maps consist of two types: the geo-centric and the ego-centric. The geo-centric map represents an environment in terms of cardinal indicators and landmarks in a geographically consistent manner. The ego-centric map shows the perceiving individual’s relative and subjective understanding of an environment. The maps will inform the construction of 3D “index models.” The instructor will deliver a lecture on maps and mapping.
Week 3-4: Design & Construction of 1:1 Sonic Objects
Using the maps and the index models, the students will design and construct 1:1-scale sonic objects. The sonic object may range from the wearable to architectural scale that will contain and generate sound. The sonic object should include its own sonic signature, as well as the sound montage composed in the course. The final review will consist of verbal-graphic presentation and the on-site demo of the sound objects.

Short Description

The summer course Architecture of Soundscape Berlin is inspired by Berlin’s rich and stimulating urban milieu. It provides aesthetic and technical appreciation of urban soundscape and aims to teach highly effective design tools, techniques and processes.
The course consists of:
  1. Lectures and workshops of sound and spatial form
  2. Sound sampling and montage from Berlin’s various hotspots
  3. Hands-on instructions and exercises with drawing, coding/scripting, hardware design & assembly, and construction
  4. Design and production of architectural composition and the 1:1 sound objects that incorporate both analog and digital tools and techniques
  5. Installation & display of the sound objects in public
