DEPARTMENT CHAIR POSITION

 

Position:

 

Associate/Full Professor and Department Chair in Communication Disorders.  Full-time, tenure-track position beginning September 1, 2016.

 

Job Description:

 

The Communication Disorders Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Associate Professor/Full Professor who will also serve as Department Chair. In addition to maintaining a strong research program in their chosen area, the Chair will provide departmental leadership and vision that advances excellence in teaching and learning, research and outreach. The Chair represents and advocates for the department at the school, university and community levels. The Chair holds overall responsibility for managing the department, fostering faculty development, supporting the department’s clinic director, and working with campus and external partners on a variety of initiatives related to the departmental and School of Public Health and Health Sciences’ strategic goals. This position includes a 9-month contract as well as a chair stipend and summer salary.

 

Requirements:

 

The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology or a related discipline, although well-qualified candidates with a Ph.D. in Audiology or a related discipline will be considered. Candidates are expected to show evidence of the ability to lead a department offering academic, research, and clinical training, strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills, independent and collaborative research accomplishments, interest in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and a record of peer-reviewed publications commensurate with experience and rank. The successful candidate will complement existing expertise in the Communication Disorders Department; therefore, applicants with research interests in any aspect of communication disorders will be considered.

The Department of Communication Disorders offers the B.S., M.A., Au.D. and Ph.D. degrees.  Both the M.A. and Au.D. programs are CAA-accredited and student stipends are available from federal training and research grants.  The Department currently has 12 full-time faculty members and is located within the School of Public Health and Health Sciences on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. The Department is committed to increasing the diversity of the faculty, student body, and curriculum. UMass Amherst has been classified as having Very High Research Activity by the Carnegie Foundation. The statewide University system has five campuses, including a medical school located in Worcester, 50 miles from Amherst.
