Dear Daniele and list,

since I understand you need primarily a cheap solution that still can provide high temporal precision and simplicity of data treatment, I would recommend using one of the relatively new open source hardware platforms, such as Arduino (http://www.arduino.cc/). It contains a number of A/D converters as well as TTL inputs/outputs as well as a microcomputer. It can therefore be programmed to operate in real-time as a standalone, independent of any personal computer you need for the control and programming interfacing. It will a bit of programming to perform a tapping experiment, but so would Eprime/Presentation/Inquisit, right? The microchip clock frequency and the RAM are more than sufficient for your needs. The Arduino costs about 40 Euro but there are both cheaper and more expensive varieties. the

Dear all,
I am trying to think to a simple and cheap solution to record children 
in a tapping task (eg along with a metronome or a piece of music).
I have up to now found several solutions commonly used, but none of them 
is cheap. For instance, using a software such as Presentation to send 
the auditory stimulus and record with the space bar (requires 
Presentation/E-Prime license), or using Cakewalk and a tapping pad 
(requires Cakewalk license and a tapping pad).
So I would be glad if you could share your advice on the "optimal" 
solution, optimizing the real cost (in euros), the precision (in 
milliseconds) and the other cost (the hours I'll spend analyzing data, 
for instance recording the tapping on a microphone ...).
