      Which one of Hartmann's 1993 JASA papers are you refering to?
One of them has 6 listeners and other (Hartmann and Rakerd) has 11
listener data. So please specify what you mean by "very large" N.
We (Jont Allen's group at UIUC) typically use 10-20 listeners for our
confusion matrix experiments. One of those is published in JASA April
2007 issue.
You may also want to look at David Pisoni's work.
