Learn to consider vs. learn to ignore



Dear list,
I have one curiosity:

as far as (auditory/visual/etc.) recognition is concerned,

is it more advantageous to learn what is relevant to the recognition of a
particular event (i.e., learn to consider), or what is irrelevant/misleading
(i.e., learn to ignore)?
