Speech samples "squished" in the frequency domain?

Hi,

Does anyone know if speech [or fragments] can be understood if contrained and squished into a narrow band of say 750Hz?

For example, could we create an understandable bandlimited speech signal of say 750Hz wide at a centre frequencey of 1k, 1.5k, 2k,
2,5k, 3k, 3.5k, 4k, 4.5k & 5k?

Possibly deep male voices could be used as the basis for the low-end and female/childrens voices at the high end.

Or do humans need a wider range than this to comprehend speech? Also, would a "squeaky" narow band signal at say 4k sound
ridiculous?

Thanks.

regards,

Richard
