Re: cochlear implant rehabilitation
Dear List,
A previous message asked about the rehabilitation of post-linguistically
deaf subjects after being fitted with cochlear implants. A coworker of
mine who also works for Advanced Bionics, a company that manufactures
cochlear implants, tells me that post-linguistically deaf adults do not
receive any training. This may be why it was difficult to find
information on how the training is conducted. They apparently are able
to learn on their own quite quickly, and in about three months have
generally improved to their top level of functioning. Other groups, such
as children or pre-linguistically deaf cochlear implant users may need
extensive training.
