vowels versus consonants

Does anyone know of any perceptual studies that have presented speech materials from which either “just” the consonants or “just” the vowels have been “deleted”?  I use those quotation marks since of course acoustic information for individual phonemes is spread out quite a bit. I feel like I’ve read about such an experiment but can’t seem to find it in my files…

Thanks!
