I'd suggest looking at some of Leslie Kay's work with the Sonicguide.  It is a
pitch based device (at least for distance) and unlike other readily available
etas (electronic travel aids) for the blind he indicates distance with a higher
pitch whereas most people indicate it with a lower pitch.  He has quite a
research base for the way he has developed his system which is now called Kaspa
and some research on the pitch relationships.
