Pitch is also useful for content differentiation -- as in the
following sentences (the CAPS letter could be differentiated in
amplitude, but typically the pitch would rise as well):

You gave him THAT?
You gave HIM that?
You GAVE him that?
YOU gave him that?

There are plenty of other (and better) examples, but that was the
best I could come up with quickly.
