The Macarthur Auditory Research Centre (MARCS) at the University of Western
Sydney, Sydney Australia is seeking 1 postdoctoral fellow, 2 research
assistants, and 1 doctoral student (on a MARCS scholarship). The successful
applicants would join a jolly bunch of researchers working on speech and
music processing in humans and machines. Currently at MARCS we hold 3 large
Australian Research Council grants -  'From speech perception to language
acquisition';  'Speech perception by eye and ear'; 'Auditory Pattern
Processing'; 1 SPIRT grant - 'The song and dance of mother and infant in
health and depression'; and various UWS internal grants.

Post-Doctoral Fellow
The postdoctoral fellow will be involved, with Denis Burnham, in the
management of the above mentioned grants at an executive level; involved in
the generation of research grant income, including applying for grants,
talking with industry partners; and will pursue their own research
interests within the specialisations of the MARCS lab. Applicants should
hold a PhD (or be very close to submission or graduation) preferably in
Psychology or Linguistics, and should be interested in pursuing a career in
research. The position is available from January 2001, but for a suitable
applicant the starting date could be delayed until mid-2001. In the first
instance a 12-month contract can be offered with good prospects of
extension beyond this period. Salary Range: $45,388 - $48,722 pa depending
upon qualifications and experience.

Research Assistant - Psychology and/or Linguistics
A full-time research assistant (Level 5 or 6) with at least a good honours
degree in psychology, linguistics, or a related area is required to prepare
speech stimuli, run speech perception experiments with adults and children,
and conduct statistical, acoustic, and phonetic analyses. Knowledge of or
interest in any of the following would be an advantage - speech analysis,
statistical packages, computer programming, music production, music
sampling/sequencing or tone languages. The position is available from
December, 2000. In the first instance a 12-month contract can be offered
with good prospects of extension beyond this period. Salary Range: $33,617
- - $42,022 pa depending upon qualifications and experience.

Research Assistant -Signal Processing and/or Computing and/or Music
Technology
A full-time research assistant (Level 5 or 6) with at least a good honours
degree in signal processing, computer science, speech science, electrical
engineering or a related area is required to prepare speech stimuli,
analyse and synthesise speech, analyse large data sets, run neural net and
modelling applications, and write computer programs (especially in C and
MATLAB environments). Knowledge of or interest in any of the following
would be an advantage - human information processing, music production,
music sampling/sequencing, linguistics/phonetics, statistical analysis, or
tone languages. The position is available from December, 2000. In the first
instance a 12-month contract can be offered with good prospects of
extension beyond this period. Salary Range: $33,617 - $42,022 pa depending
upon qualifications and experience.

Doctoral Scholarship
A 3-year doctoral scholarship is offered for work on speech perception
development, specifically the relative salience of tonal and segmental
information for 6- to 9-month-old infants. The successful candidate will
have a first class or very high IIA Honours degree in Psychology, and an
interest in human development especially in the areas of perception and/or
language. The student should be motivated, diligent and keen to succeed.
Knowledge of or interest in any of the following would be an advantage -
speech perception, speech perception development, child development, infant
studies, linguistics/phonetics, music production, music
sampling/sequencing, or tone languages. The normal stipend, $16,415 pa will
be awarded, and there is the likelihood of some RA work or teaching.
