Free field listening

Dear List,
       Does anyone know if there is a literature on free-field
listening psychophysics, or perception of broad sound sources vs.
point sources? I had heard that there was some discussion of this
phenomena in the engineering literature. Any references, or
description of the findings in this area, would be greatly
appreciated.
