ICMPC6 - Final call for papers



SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MUSIC PERCEPTION AND COGNITION
FOURTH TRIENNIAL ESCOM CONFERENCE

KEELE, UK, 5-10 AUGUST 2000

FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

DEADLINE DECEMBER 1st 1999

This is to remind intending delegates that abstracts for contributions
to
this conference must reach the conference secretariat by Wednesday 1st
December 1999.

Information on how to submit may be found on our conference web site at
http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/ps/icmpc.html, which also contains full
information about costs and facilities.

Submissions may be made electronically to icmpc6@keele.ac.uk which is
also
the email address for enquiries.  Submissions may also be sent by disk
to
Antonia Ivaldi, Conference Secretariat, Department of Psychology, Keele
University, Newcastle, Staffs, ST5 5BG, UK. (tel +44 (0)1782 583538).

NOTIFICATION

Notification of acceptance of submissions will be sent (electronically
wherever possible) in early February 2000.  At that time the web-site
will
be updated to allow electronic registration for delegates.  Credit card
bookings will be accepted.  There are discounts for early registration
(before March 1st 2000, and before June 1st 2000).


CONFERENCE UPDATE

1. INVITED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

We are delighted to announce the following keynote speakers, each
associated
with a main theme of the conference:

Mario Baroni (Bologna) Meaning in music
Eugenia Costa Giomi (McGill) Music as an aid to learning and well-being
Simon Frith (Strathclyde) Music in popular culture and
everyday life (*)
Caroline Palmer (Ohio State) The study of music performance
Klaus Scherer (Geneva) Music and evolution
Johan Sundberg (Stockholm) The human voice

2. ADDITIONAL CONFERENCE THEMES

Other conference themes already advertised include

Young people's participation in and achievement in music
Gesture and music

We expect submissions for symposia on the following additional topics:

The body and music
Cross-cultural aspects of music psychology
Practice activity in music
Music and Emotion
Categorical rhythm perception/quantisation
Vibrato
Categorization, similarity perception, cue abstraction

We welcome further proposals.  Additional themes will emerge by grouping
out
of submitted papers.


3. SOCIAL AND CULTURAL PROGRAMME

The social and cultural programme will include the following three
concerts.
Tuesday 8th August: Wigan Youth Jazz Band, sponsored by Yamaha-Kemble
UK.
Sunday 6th August: contemporary and electroacoustic music presented by
graduate students of Keele University's Music Department.
Monday 7th August: South Indian Vocal Ensemble directed by Dr. M.
Hariharan, Principal of the Barathiar Centre for Performing Arts,
Pondicherry, India

Several excursions are also being planned for the afternoon of Monday
7th
August.  These may include Wedgwood Pottery Factory and Museum,
Chatsworth
(stately home and garden, home of the Duke of Devonshire), Chester
(historic
Roman city).
