You are right: I do believe that the distinction between metathetic and
prothetic continua is artificial. Indeed, the literature furnishes
evidence that when we ask subjects to estimate relative sensory magnitudes
(such as judging half-loudness, half-brightness, or half-pitch) their
answers are based upon experience with associated physical scales.
