chair at UCL, England

Chair of Experimental Phonetics or of Speech and Hearing Science
****************************************************************

University College London intends to make an appointment to the
established Chair of Experimental Phonetics, vacant upon the
retirement of Prof. Adrian Fourcin.

For this important post we are seeking a scientist with an
outstanding research record, able to lead teaching and research
in one or more of the following broad areas of interest and
activity:
- spoken language engineering
- speech perception and language processing
- audiology and speech pathology.
Ideally the successful candidate will have an awareness of
related developments in other areas of phonetics and
linguistics. The Department also has established Chairs in
Phonetics and in Linguistics, and there are currently two
further Professors of Linguistics. We invite applications
particularly from scientists with a background in mathematics,
physics, engineering, or signal processing.

UCL's Department of Phonetics and Linguistics has an outstanding
international reputation and makes a distinguished contribution
at an international level of excellence to undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching and research in all the areas listed
above. It has also initiated and is currently co-ordinating
Europe-wide research projects in each of them, and is engaged in
ongoing collaboration with research institutes in China and the
USA. UCL is a leading centre for speech and hearing research,
having also a Department of Laryngology and Otology (including a
Chair of Audiology) and collaborating closely with the National
Hospital's College of Speech Sciences.

Although the Chair has hitherto been in Experimental Phonetics,
it may be retitled, depending on the person appointed, as (for
example) the Chair of Speech and Hearing Science(s).

Salary will be negotiable within the professorial range. Further
particulars may be obtained from the Head of Department, Prof.
J.C.Wells, tel. +44 (0)171-380 7175, fax +44 (0)171-383 4108,
e-mail wells@phon.ucl.ac.uk.

Applications (ten copies from UK candidates, one copy from
overseas candidates) including a curriculum vitae and the names
and addresses of three referees (including at least one overseas
referee) should be sent to The Provost, University College
London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, to arrive by 15 November
1994.

UCL is working towards equal opportunity.
