addendum to my query about 7+/-2.

I guess I'm getting too old. I had thought the Pollack papers were so
well known that you'd all have them in a file... anyway, since there
were requests for those references:

Pollack, Irwin (1952) The information of elementary auditory displays.
        J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 24, 745-749.

Pollack, Irwin (1953) The information of elementary auditory displays.
        JASA, 25, 765-769.

Pollack, Irwin (1956) Identification and discrimination of elementary
        auditory displays. JASA, 28, 906-909.

two of our papers that we think are at least distantly relevant to the
issue are:

Watson, C.S., Foyle, D.C. and Kidd, G.R. (1990) Limited processing
capacity for auditory discrimination. JASA, 88, 2631-2638.

  Kidd, G.R. and Watson, C.S.(1992) The "proportion-of-the-total-duration
rule" for the discrimination of auditory patterns. JASA, 92,
        3109-3118.

Thanks for the quick responses....

Chuck
