He was known for doing very careful = neurophysiology studies on how the auditory system represents sounds. He = grew up on a ranch in rural Nevada, made his way to Caltech, and then = spent his entire professional life at Johns Hopkins, with occasional = forays to Berkeley, which is how I got to know him. Earlier this year, at the ARO (Association for Research in = Otolaryngology) Mid-Winter meeting, a number of his students and = collaborators gave a wonderful set of presentations memorializing his = work. The ARO has agreed to leave a recording of this session up = =E2=80=9Cpermanently=E2=80=9D. I=E2=80=99ve been a fan of Eric and Eric=E2=80=99s work for many years = (the plots of the cat neuron data in Sachs and Young are legendary), and = I certainly knew much of his work.
