[AUDITORY] Funded PhD and Research Assistant Positions at IEM/KUG Graz, Austria

Dear auditory list,

The Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria (KUG), is offering two fully-funded PhD positions within the KUG’s Sound and Music Computing doctoral programme and one fully-funded research assistant position starting in October 2026.

  1. Machine Learning in Musical Audio: Independent research in computational methods for time-based arts and musicology (e.g. generative audio/music, timbre/_expression_, MIR, digital/computational musicology) under supervision of Prof. Anna Aljanaki. Fixed-term 4 years: https://go.iem.at/UAMLMA
  2. Acoustics and Audio Engineering: Independent research in audio signal processing and machine learning, with emphasis on real-time signal processing under supervision of Prof. Alois Sontacchi. Fixed-term 4 years: https://go.iem.at/UAAAE
  3. Audio-visual Digital Twins: Research on audio-visual digital twins as use cases in the “Digital Twins” infrastructure project (acoustic measurement/virtualization, laser scanning / photogrammetry, geometrical modeling in game engine) under supervision of Ass.Prof. Matthias Frank. Fixed-term 21 months: https://go.iem.at/UAAVDT

Note:
Positions 1 and 2 are fully funded PhD positions (Austrian term: University Assistant, Prae-Doc), which are university staff employment positions in which the PhD project is developed jointly with the supervisor within the advertised research area, allowing considerable freedom to shape your own research. Candidates with a concrete research idea are encouraged to include a research exposé with their application, but this is not required.
The third position is a 21-month fully funded university staff employment position, embedded in an ongoing research project determining the scope of the work, with the option of simultaneously enrolling in the PhD programme.

We would be grateful if you could forward these offers to your students and other potential candidates. The application deadline is June 17, 2026.

Best regards,
Felix Holzmüller (on behalf of the IEM Team)
