Dear Auditory List, We are looking for candidates for a PhD position in the project “Bilingual Flexibility: The Impact of Background Language on Verbal Performance and Situational Language Balance”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project is situated at the intersection of auditory cognition, experimental psychology, and cognitive noise research. It investigates how background speech in the first (L1) or second (L2) language influences bilingual individuals’ verbal performance (e.g., short-term memory, reading, text production). The goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the cognitive control mechanisms that enable bilinguals to successfully manage the challenges of multilingual environments. More information about the position and application process can be found here: Application deadline is November 23, 2025. Please note that we are seeking a candidate with very good written and spoken German and English language skills (at least C1), due to the project’s stimulus material and the nature of the participants’ cognitive tasks. Please feel free to share this announcement with anyone who might be interested! And don’t hesitate to reach out in case of any questions.
