[AUDITORY] Fully funded PhD in the EPSRC CDT in Sustainable Sound Futures, UK

Adverts for our PhD projects to start autumn 2026 are now out. Deadline for applications 11th Jan 2026.
The Sustainable Sounds Futures CDT is a leading doctoral training centre, funded by EPSRC in collaboration with the universities of Salford, Sheffield, Bristol, and Southampton and over 50 project partners. The PhDs are fully funded and available at all four universities.
Projects most relevant to Auditory are:
  • Communication and listening effort for blind and partially sighted people (with RNIB)
  • Personalised auditory and listener preference modelling for headphone audio optimisation (with Sonos)
  • Restorative urban green space: addressing inequity from a sound perspective (with UKHSA)
  • Accessible tinnitus notch noise therapy via machine learning, acoustic metamaterials and additive manufacturing (with NHS and Tinnitus UK)
Candidates must have the potential to do great research and contribute new knowledge to the field of acoustics. They will have a broader interest in sound and want to join and collaborate across a diverse community of researchers. This doctoral programme will provide access to bespoke training and specialist laboratories to support individual research and develop the core skills to make a difference in your future career.
