Hearing health in the live event sector

Joint presentation by:
Dr Ian Wiggins, University of Nottingham
Dr Adam Hill, University of Derby

Recent years have seen a renewed impetus to protect the hearing health of performers and audience members at live events, as reflected by the launch of initiatives such as the World Health Organization’s ‘Make Listening Safe’ initiative, the ‘Healthy Ears, Limited Annoyance’ (HELA) initiative, and the Night-Time Industries Association’s ‘Listen for Life’ campaign. In this seminar, Dr Ian Wiggins and Dr Adam Hill will introduce the WHO Global Standard for Safe Listening Venues and Events, describing its development, key features, and requirements. They will go on to discuss a case study conducted at the Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa, India, which in December 2023 sought to be the first large-scale event anywhere in the world to comply with the WHO standard. Finally, they will discuss some of the latest developments in this space, including the launch of the HELA Initiative, consisting of an online training and certification platform for everyone involved in the live event sector and an associated collaborative network designed to pump-prime innovative, interdisciplinary research in this area.
