[AUDITORY] Fully Funded PhD Opportunity in Music Cognition at the University of York



Excited to announce a fully funded PhD studentship as part of our recent ERC Synergy Project REM@KE (Reconstructing Embodied Musical Knowledge at the Keyboard).

Location: School of Arts and Creative Technologies, University of York
Deadline: Thursday 8 May 2025, 12 noon UK time
Funding: Full tuition plus 20.780 GB pounds annual stipend plus research travel allowance
Duration: 4 years full-time

This PhD project will explore how musicians, instrument builders, and listeners engage with historical keyboard instruments and their replicas, using qualitative research methods to uncover the role of embodiment in musical experience and instrument reconstruction. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Andrea Schiavio within an interdisciplinary team spanning music cognition, organology, historical musicology, psychoacoustics, and digital humanities.

Who should apply?
We welcome applicants with a Master’s degree in Music, Psychology, Musicology, Cognitive Science, or related fields, with experience in qualitative methods and an interest in embodied cognition and historical instruments.
