Loud sound has the capacity to excite and injure in equal measure. There is= growing awareness of the need for the professional audio industry to take = a pro-active approach to protect audience members' hearing. This project aims to conduct ground-breaking research into how live sound c= an be made simultaneously safer and better quality, to the benefit of audie= nces in Nottingham and beyond. The PhD candidate will be involved in settin= g up long-term sound monitoring systems in local venues, developing a smart= phone app that will allow venue goers to contribute their experience of sou= nd quality and hearing symptoms for research, and using data science techni= ques to improve our understanding of how the details of the sound exposure = influence hearing-injury risk and perceived sound quality. The project will be supervised by Ian Wiggins and Graham Naylor at the Univ= ersity of Nottingham, and Adam Hill at the University of Derby. The student= ship will cover UK/Home tuition fees.
