Bio: Dr Winn's work is all about understanding how hearing loss affects people, = both in terms of speech communication and participation in relationships an= d society. Dr Winn's work is all about speech communication and the things that make i= t difficult for people who have hearing loss. He is an audiologist and hear= ing scientist with training in speech science, cochlear implants, and lingu= istics. His lab is funded by the National Institutes of Health to study lis= tening effort, motivated by real experiences that often get overlooked in c= linic appointments and laboratory studies. The goal of this work is to bett= er understand the factors that lead to frustration and giving up, as well a= s understanding how hearing loss affects a person's participation in relati= onships and society. A brief abstract for the talk can be found below: For people with hearing loss, the effort of listening to speech can have si= gnificant impact on quality of life that goes overlooked in clinical evalua= tions and scientific experiments. In this talk, I focus on how the effort o= f mentally correcting a misperceived word could last long enough to impair = perception of the next sentence, derailing the entire conversation or drain= ing motivation. This talk will explain the ways that we can measure and exp= lain the timing and precision of listening effort using measurements of pup= il dilation. There are three takeaway messages: 1) intelligibility scores d= on't give an adequate picture of listening effort, 2) the effort from one m= oment carries forward to impair perception of later words, and 3) that incr= eased effort is not detectable in the voice of the listener as they give ve= rbal responses. These studies show that listening effort changes on a momen= t-to-moment basis and is partly under control of the listener, opening up t= he door for improved theoretical models and new approaches to clinical mana= gement.
