Professor King will be giving the following talk on Thurs= day 10th March at 2.00 pm (UK time): "The adaptable auditory system: from everyday listening to compensating for= hearing loss" Abstract: A primary goal of our senses is to provide an accurate and relia= ble representation of the world around us. Because our acoustic environment= s are constantly changing - for example, when we step out from a crowded, n= oisy bar onto a quiet street - it is essential that the brain is able to an= alyse sounds in a flexible fashion. As a result of their remarkably adaptab= le properties, the responses of auditory neurons can be matched to the cons= tantly changing statistics of the sounds that reach our ears. This helps to= maintain neural sensitivity over the most commonly encountered values and = to generate representations of sound features in the brain that are toleran= t to the presence of background noise. Neural adaptation to changes in soun= d inputs can also occur over longer time scales, and plays a key role in en= abling our auditory perceptual abilities to at least partially recover from= the effects of hearing loss. In this talk, I shall consider the basis for = these adaptive processes, which collectively highlight the highly dynamic w= ay in which sounds are processed in the brain. Bio: Andrew King is a Wellcome Principal Research Fellow and Professor of = Neurophysiology at the University of Oxford. He heads the Auditory Neurosci= ence Group and is the Director of the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience i= n the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. He is also the Direct= or of the University of Oxford Doctoral Training Programme in Neuroscience = and a Fellow of Merton College. Andrew studied physiology at King's College= London and obtained his PhD from the National Institute for Medical Resear= ch. Apart from a spell as a visiting scientist at the Eye Research Institut= e in Boston, he has worked at the University of Oxford since then, where hi= s research has been supported by fellowships from the Science and Engineeri= ng Research Council, the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine and the We= llcome Trust. Andrew was awarded the Wellcome Prize in Physiology and is a = Fellow of the Royal Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Physi= ological Society. He is a Senior Editor at eLife.
