Subject: [AUDITORY] Fully-funded PhD studentship in prediction in conversation - linking cognition and behaviour (location Glasgow) From: Lauren Hadley <Lauren.Hadley1@xxxxxxxx> Date: Fri, 19 Feb 2021 19:31:32 +0000--_000_AM6PR06MB53364E820DB3598D17B24D74FE849AM6PR06MB5336eurp_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Dear colleagues, Applications are invited for a fully funded 3 year PhD studentship based in= the Scottish Section of the University of Nottingham's Hearing Sciences de= partment, located in Glasgow. Please could you please share this widely? This PhD will investigate how people's ability to make predictions when lis= tening to speech relates to their physical behaviour in conversation. It wi= ll take typical lab based measures of prediction during speech listening (e= .g., a visual world paradigm), explore ways of measuring predictive behavio= ur in conversation (such as anticipatory head turns or gaze to a new talker= , smooth turn-taking etc), and investigate the link between the two. The st= udent will study both normal hearing and hearing impaired participants in d= ifferent acoustic environments. These experiments will be carried out in ou= r specially equipped laboratory, in which several people can hold a convers= ation while their body and eye movements are tracked, and the student will = be trained to use a range of relevant experimental techniques. This PhD fal= ls within a larger research programme investigating prediction and hearing = loss, with the ultimate aim of understanding the basis of social difficulty= to develop hearing technology able to help. Applicants should be a UK national and have an undergraduate degree in Psyc= hology, Hearing Sciences or a related subject (relevant Master's degree wil= l be an advantage). We are looking for a strong background in research meth= ods (multi-method experience will be an advantage) as well as a keen intere= st in speech and communication.
