The grant is held a= nd managed by Dr Paul Vickers in the Department of Computer & Information s= ciences at Northumbria University with co-investigators at nearby Newcastle= University. Sonification is the use of non-speech audio to communicate data and data re= lations but, unlike information visualisation, is still not widely used. Th= e sonification research community's understanding of the roles played by em= bodied perception, spatial considerations, and aesthetics in our listening = to, and perception of, sonification is very limited. These aspects of sonif= ication cannot be addressed except through an interdisciplinary approach, a= nd this project draws together proven experts in computer science, sonifica= tion, listening and perception, ethnography, music composition, and aesthet= ics to foster a fundamentally new understanding from which to derive concre= te guidelines for better sonification design. Making use of spatialised audio, including (though not limited to) Northumb= ria=92s IKO icosahedral loudspeaker (which is the only one in the UK) the a= im of this project is to conduct a comprehensive study of sonification maki= ng and listening to form a fundamental understanding of the relationships b= etween sonifications, their designers, and their listeners and to stimulate= a revitalised agenda for sonification research and practice. The interdisc= iplinary nature of the project team will enable us to develop a new theory = of sonification listening and to derive an aesthetics of sonification which= , up till now, has no accepted definition. These outcomes will be important= in formulating a new framework for successful sonification design. We are seeking one Research Fellow at Northumbria to work on the RADICAL pr= oject with a primary focus on the design and implementation of data sonific= ations. You will likely have a technical background in computer science or = human-computer interaction and a demonstrable interest in sonification, son= ic interaction design, or digital audio. The project has recently appointed to the project a research associate at N= ewcastle University with a focus on ethnographic evaluation of technologica= lly-mediated musical and sonic arts practice. Therefore, a degree of famili= arity with, or ability to adapt to the basics of the Newcastle focus will b= e significant in developing interdisciplinary collaboration with the Newcas= tle team. Since the research conducted across RADICAL is highly collaborative and int= erdisciplinary you will have demonstrable interest to work in an interdisci= plinary team. The Research Fellow is expected to work closely with their co= unterpart at Newcastle and should be(or be willing to become) conversant wi= th methods of ethnographic research, experimental musics/sonic arts, and Re= search through Design. Excellent communication skills are essential. Experience and familiarity wi= th research funding would be beneficial. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate on a new area of interdiscip= linary research. This is a three-year fixed term post. The job is full time= and you will be working from Northumbria University=92s main campus in New= castle upon Tyne. The CV of the successful candidate will be sent to the L= everhulme Trust for approval before the appointment is confirmed. See the p= roject web page at https://projectRadical.github.io/about<https://projectra= dical.github.io/about> for more information about RADICAL. The project offi= cially begins in mid-January so we are looking to have someone in post as s= oon as possible after that. For an informal discussion about the Northumbria post, please contact Paul = Vickers at paul.vickers@xxxxxxxx<mailto:paul.vickers@xxxxxxxx= c.uk>.
