The project "Understanding the effects of musicianship and noise exposure o= n real-world hearing abilities across the lifespan" aims to address the fol= lowing research questions: 1. How does sub-clinical noise-induced hearing damage translate into real-w= orld hearing difficulties, especially those that are problematic for musici= ans, such as tinnitus, listening effort and fatigue, musical competency, an= d speech-in-noise processing? 2. What are the mechanisms of real-world noise-induced hearing difficulties= across the lifespan? 3. Can we detect early signs of hearing damage, potentially in children as = young as 11 years old? 4. How do cognitive and/or auditory processing skills mitigate the effects = of occupational music noise exposure on real-world hearing abilities? We will use a variety of methods including questionnaires, psychophysical t= esting, cognitive testing and electrophysiology to explore these research q= uestions. This information could be used to develop interventions to preven= t hearing problems and for rehabilitation of real-world hearing problems, a= nd ultimately ensure hearing and career longevity. More details of the project are provided here: https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/mrc-dtp-understanding-the-effects-of-= musicianship-and-noise-exposure-on-real-world-hearing-abilities-across-the-= lifespan/?p124788 N.B. Please read "Funding Notes" on FindAPhD.com if you are a non-UK applic= ant. The deadline for applications is Sunday 15th November. Enquiries can be mad= e via FindAPhD.com or by emailing the supervisor directly; Samuel.couth@xxxxxxxx= chester.ac.uk<mailto:Samuel.couth@xxxxxxxx>. Formal applications can be made via the University of Manchester's MRC DTP = webpage: https://www.bmh.manchester.ac.uk/study/research/mrc-dtp/apply/ We strongly encourage potential applicants to contact the project superviso= r before making a formal application.
