The MAPLE (Music, Acoustics, Perception and LEarning) lab at McMaster University has two potential trainee opportunities graduate students beginning Fall 2021. The first is for an ongoing project exploring the use of new timbres for auditory alarms in medical devices. The successful student will join our group working with an international team to create more effective human-computer interfaces optimizing surgical outcomes. The background for this project is described in our recent Scientific Reports survey/review: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-63132-2. The second opening is for a SSHRC-funded project exploring changes in the communication of emotion over several centuries of musical history. Applicants will need a Bachelor=E2=80=99s degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or another affiliated discipline. Experience with computer programming and statistical analyses will be viewed favourably but is not required.
